MCBS Data Documentation
(Data Documentation is sometimes referred to as data dictionaries, file layouts, and data layouts)
ResDAC Disclosure Statement:
This resource is for reference purposes only. Record layouts may vary, users should not use these layouts to develop programming language for specific data files. Please contact ResDAC with questions about the data files.
- Descriptions of the Record Identification Code (RIC) types, or record types, in the most recent MCBS Access to Care and Cost and Use module
- Access to Care and Cost and Use module codebooks, organized by record type (RIC), contain the variable name, description, record type location, questionnaire number (for data collected in the survey), and unweighted frequencies
- MCBS questionnaires contain descriptive information about each questionnaire, as well as the question text asked during the survey
- Data documentation for the MCBS Medicare claims files
There are seven Medicare claims files made available with the MCBS Access to Care and Cost and Use Modules. The claims data sent with the MCBS survey vary slightly in format compared with the other Medicare claims data. The claims data sent with the MCBS has a BASEID variable inserted at the beginning of the record and a few of the variables have been removed. In addition, the institutional claims data have had the claims record and trailer portions divided into two files. Use the 'File Description for Medicare Claims' table to determine the variable and variable name and use the data dictionaries to determine the variable definition and corresponding values.
