Basic Workshop in Medicare Administrative Data

Workshop Design and Goals:
This course is designed for people who are familiar with Medicare data and know the names and general content of the standard enrollment and claims filesdenominator, MedPAR, Carrier, and Outpatient and be familiar with the coding schemes for Medicare data--ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes, CPT codes, revenue centers and DRGs. This content is all covered in CMS: 101, but many researchers gain this information from other sources.
Educational Objectives:
This course describes the SEER/Medicare database and addresses issues that arise when using SEER/Medicare data rather than standard Medicare data:
- How the claims format differs between the two databases
- Interpreting and using information from SEER sources
- Deciding whether SEER/Medicare is the right database for your project
