CMS 301: Using SEER/Medicare Data for Research

Basic Workshop in Medicare Administrative Data

Workshop Design and Goals:

This course is designed for people who are familiar with Medicare data and know the names and general content of the standard enrollment and claims files­denominator, MedPAR, Carrier, and Outpatient and be familiar with the coding schemes for Medicare data--ICD-9 diagnosis and procedure codes, CPT codes, revenue centers and DRGs. This content is all covered in CMS: 101, but many researchers gain this information from other sources.

Educational Objectives:

This course describes the SEER/Medicare database and addresses issues that arise when using SEER/Medicare data rather than standard Medicare data:

  • How the claims format differs between the two databases
  • Interpreting and using information from SEER sources
  • Deciding whether SEER/Medicare is the right database for your project
