Pricing set for Part D Characteristics files

CMS has established pricing for the Part D Characteristics files. The record layouts for the files are not available yet, but researchers may begin planning their data budgets for projects using the Research Identifiable Files (RIF). Please call ResDAC at 888-973-7322 to obtain pricing for the drug, plan, prescriber, pharmacy characteristics files.


Limited Data Set (LDS) 2008 Standard Analytical File availability

The 2008 LDS Standard Analytical Files are anticipated to become available in late November 2009. The LDS Order form has been updated to include the 2008 Standard Analytical Files. Orders for these files are currently being accepted.


APHA Medicare Part D Presentation

Former Identifiable OPPS file now a Limited Data Set

As of 4/3/2009, the identifiable OPPS file is now considered a Limited Data Set. The former identifiable version of the file is now the only version available. Review the record layout of the OPPS file now available for more information. Requestors should follow the Limited Data Set request process to obtain the file.


CMS Guide to Requests for Medicare Part D Data

The purpose of the guide (under the "Download" section) is to provide a comprehensive document for the research identifiable Part D data requestor community that includes information about the:

  • Part D data rule governing the release of Part D dat
  • CMS Part D Prescription Drug Event (PDE) data release process
  • PDE data and their limitations for research and other purposes,
  • Process for submitting a PDE data request
  • CMS processes for reviewing and approving PDE data requests

Medicare Part D Data Roll Out Schedule

CMS is now accepting identifiable requests for all or a subset of the 37 PDE data elements. Requests may be submitted for Part D data for new projects or to request an update under an existing DUA. Researchers may request the drug or plan characteristics files at this time and the prescriber or pharmacy characteristics files in late spring 2010.

CMS has set prices for the Part D data and the characteristics files. Researchers may request cost estimates from the ResDAC Help Desk.  To make an identifiable data request please see Requesting CMS's Identifiable Data file - New Use Data website.  


Medicare Cost Report Online Tutorial Available

The Medicare Cost Report Tutorial is a 30-minute online tutorial designed to give a general introduction to downloading and using the Medicare cost reports in the HCRIS database. If you are interested in viewing the tutorial, please send an email to the ResDAC inbox requesting the URL.


Data Request Submission Change as of 12/1/2008

As of 12/1/2008, ResDAC will submit all research identifiable (RIF) data request packets to CMS, including requests for new use, reuse, and amendment requests. ResDAC will securely submit electronic copies of the data request packet materials to CMS on the researcher's behalf. Please see the RIF request flowchart outlining the new request process.
